The Epson customer service group is undertrained, inexperienced and very limited when put to the test about how to solve printer problems. (Read full review at CNET)

 |
| Pros: It is a medium format printer that, when working right and adjusted correctly, prints out exceptional quality 13 by 19 size prints. |
| Cons: Epson software seems to conflict Adobe and creates unsure operating results. Printer manual gives insufficient information realtive to using roll paper, printer setup, color correction, sizing. The ink volume information is very, very, inaccurate. |

If you feel like getting frustrated and wasting countless hours with little to show for it, this printer is for you. Aside from some basic printing duties, this thing seems very finicky and just does not live up to expectations. B&W printing is just (Read full review at CNET)

| Pros: The few times I was able to get this printer to work properly, the prints actually looked quite good. CD printing feature is nice, which is one reason I bought this printer. |
| Cons: Since going with a newer computer a year and a half ago, it has been nothing but frustration. The color setup has never been even close, despite several many-hour sessions trying to get it right. It is fussy with media. Driver software is glitchy. |

| Pros: Tiny ink cartridges will need frequent replacement. It keeps money running to the factory. |
| Cons: Printing heads get clogged all the time, and printer waists ink solving the cloggs. At the end all used ink is stored in the foam pads, that cannot be removed or cleaned, and printer locks itself. |

The printer should come with a sledge hammer so you can smash it to bits when it frustrates the hell out of you...and it will! Like everyone else, I get the media error. It only grabs the paper sometimes and even when it does it starts printing befor (Read full review at CNET)

For a $500+ printer, it costs roughly $100 to replace the ink cartridges. Within the first month, minor pieces broke which was very annoying (but not detrimental). The most infuriating thing about this printer is that after 18 months of use, an err (Read full review at CNET)

| The big question for Epson watchers is, who exactly is this printer aimed at? The word from Epson HQ is that it's a replacement for the 1280/1290 series. The slightly more upmarket 2100/2200 range will continue for now. This may well be true, but the ...

| If you want to print traditionally sized 10 x 15cm photos from your digital camera, compact printers are practical and economical. But if you want to step up a gear and really make the most from your high-megapixel digital snaps, you should consider the Epson Stylus Photo R1800. It's not PictBridge compatible and has no integrated screen, but it's an A3 printer than can print borderless images up to A3+ (48 x 33cm). It can also print onto photo paper as small as 10 x 15cm and onto inkjet-compatible CDs and paper rolls for panoramic shots. It uses eight ink cartridges to generate some absolutely stunning prints. As well as the familiar six cartridges that most photo printers use, the R1800 also employs matte black and gloss black. These ink tanks come into action when printing on matte and glossy photo papers. Although we were initially cynical, the sharp, detailed, colour-rich results were dazzling and looked fantastic, while the matte and gloss finishes gave it that extra bit of professionalism. However, with all this quality something had to give and, in this case, it was speed. In our tests, a borderless A4 glossy photo took 3min 10sec, while pages of black text appeared at a rate of four pages per minute. In draft mode, though, an A3 colour page will be spat out in under a minute, which is a thumbs up for those with a home office. It's also very big (45.3cm x 61.5cm x 73.7cm) but perhaps our greatest concern is its running costs. At just shy of £90 to replace all eight ink cartridges, £25 for 50 sheets of A4 Premium Glossy paper and £350 to buy the printer in the first place, it's not cheap. Still, the R1800 is a stunning product. If you're serious about quality, and money is no object, it's worth considering. Permalink Comments Forward Print digg del.icio.us reddit! | One of the advantages of owning a high-megapixel digital camera is that you can print your photos at large sizes without a reduction in quality. The Epson Stylus Photo R1800 allows you to print onto paper sizes from 10 x 15cm right up to A3+ (48 x 33cm) and it uses eight ink cartridges to do so. Alongside the usual six colour cartridges, the R1800 uses two extra tanks - matte and gloss black. These have been designed to provide a better finish to prints used with Epson's matte and glossy photo papers. It sounds like just another marketing ploy, but the two extra inks do have an effect. Without any extra enhancement, the R1800 produced prints rich in colour with excellent skin tones and sharp detail. And print quality is difficult to fault. Naturally, the R1800 will print borderless photos but, using the supplied attachments, it will also print to inkjet-compatible CDs and onto paper rolls, which is good for panoramic shots. In our tests, a borderless A4 glossy photo took three minutes, 10 seconds to appear, while black text emerged at four pages per minute, which makes this one of the slower printers on the market. However, if you switch off the photo settings, the R1800 will be able to produce an A3 colour page in under a minute - good news for office workers. The only drawback to a printer of this ilk (apart from its gigantic footprint) is the cost of ownership. At £89.66 to replace all eight ink cartridges, £24.31 for 50 sheets of A4 Premium Glossy paper and an initial outlay of £350, it's not cheap. However, photo enthusiasts will no doubt be able to justify the cost by citing its excellent print quality and large variety of paper sizes it can accommodate.
