"Awesome media Player!"
Very Good    By mkoehne 2008-07-19 00:00:00    0 out of 0 found this reivew helpful
This is simply a great player for the money. I have two - the other is an e280 - both purchased as refurbs. I would buy another e200 in a New-York-minute. Sure the interface is a bit quirky, and Rockbox is not a lot better, but this is one tough p  (Read full review at CNET)

Having tired of a tiny and not all that user-friendly MuVu player, I "upgraded" to the Sansa e200. I am very happy, although there have been issues. First, I incorrectly assumed that the Rhapsody software was necessary in order to use the player....  (Read full review at Amazon)

I purchased the Sansa e260 for my 16 year old daughter after her second iPod had been lost/stolen. I had owned and preferred Windows based mp3 players (Creative and Rio) but she bought into the hype and had to have an iPod. Over time, she started...  (Read full review at Amazon)

SanDisk Sansa e260 The e260 offers many features, but they aren't always easy to use, and audio quality lags behind other players. The SanDisk Sansa e260 looks a lot like an Apple iPod Nano--from the front. It's roughly as tall and wide as the Nano, it has a big color screen, and its thumbwheel is surrounded by four navigation buttons. Priced at $229 (as of 4/13/06), the 4GB e260 costs $20 less than a 4GB iPod Nano. The e260 offers some attractive extras the iPod Nano doesn't: a built-in microphone, an FM tuner, a bigger color screen, PlaysForSure compatibility for online music subscriptions, video playback, and a microSD Card slot so you can expand the memory (a 1GB card costs about $50). Also, you can change the rechargeable lithium ion battery yourself, Despite the similarity in size to the Apple player, the e260 is more noticeable when in a shirt pocket. It's almost twice as thick as the iPod Nano, and is significantly heavier (2.7 ounces vs. 1.6 ounces). The e260's mechanical thumbwheel is convenient for scrolling through long song lists but can be difficult to turn. Also, because it protrudes from the faceplate, I found it difficult to get to the navigation buttons when operating the player with one hand. In addition, the e260 is slow to start up, taking about 8 seconds. In PC World' s new audio-quality tests, the e260 scored lower overall than any other flash-based player. Our test equipment measured more noise in the e260's audio than we found in the other players (the iPod Nano was the least noisy). The e260 also produced slightly more distortion than the iPod Nano, but less than that put out by a few other players we tested. The e260 comes with Rhapsody software, but will also work with the Napster and Yahoo online music stores. Radio reception from the FM tuner wasn't terribly clear when stationary, and I heard a lot of static when traveling in a car. The recordings I made of FM broadcasts were less impressive than the original broadcasts--some files were quieter on playback, and some had significantly more static than I heard originally. The e260's screen is big, and photos look great on it. Sample photos are variously oriented horizontally or vertically, which requires you to turn the player during the demonstration slide show. But all the photos I loaded displayed horizontally, failing to take advantage of all of the screen's real estate; maddeningly, the manual fails to explain how to orient photos to fill the screen. Another gripe: You have to use SanDisk's Media Converter software to load photos or videos onto the e260 because the player does not natively support any image or video formats, not even JPEG. -- Eric Butterfield ... While nobody has come close to improving on the classic simplicity of Apple's iPod navigation, Sandisk has got the closest to emulating it. Like almost all portable music players, the e260 uses playlist-based navigation to find and play a piece of music. It has a wheel, which glows blue when in use, that is used to cycle through lists of music and options. This is the only player we've seen to successfully emulate Apple's scroll wheel approach and it does this quite well, making navigating through song lists fairly simple. Annoyingly, there's no way to create a playlist while playing other files. It's possible to add files to the Go List but only while actually playing a song. So unless the music files on the PC are already arranged into playlists, it will mean listening to whole albums on the go. The other option is to go through each track in turn and select it, play it, then add it to the Go List. Only then is it possible to play the Go List itself. That's fairly annoying. It used to be that most music players included a slot for memory expansion but that seems to have died out with the huge amounts of built-in storage now available. The e260 is the only player we've seen recently that can be expanded ?? it has a slot for micro-SD memory cards. These are starting to show up in high-end phones and are currently quite expensive, but in a year or so, could provide an inexpensive way to get more space when the supplied 4GB is full. The Sansa e260 can play video files, although these need to be specially converted using the supplied software. Music, on the other hand, can be simply copied to the device using Windows Media Player, or just Windows itself. Also consider: Apple iPod nano An excellent alternative for a stylish player 169 4/5 All mp3 player reviews All MP3 Players Like this story? Like Samsung, its clear that SanDisk has taken more than a few aesthetic cues from the nano with the Sansa e260. However, this player matches Apple blow for blow, even though its more than a full ounce heavier (2.6 ounces). Coming in 2GB, 4GB, or 6GB sizes, SanDisk offers the largest capacity flash player on the market. The inclusion of a microSD Card slot pushes the storage potential even higher. With its full-color menus, durable shiny black front, and scratch-resistant Liquidmetal back, this is the most stylish nano competitor yet. The e260 is a bit shorter than the nano, but about twice as thick, sporting a 1.8-inch color screen that is the same size as the Samsung YP-Z5 s LCD. The player improves on Apples features by including an FM tuner and a removable, user-replaceable battery. You also get 20 hours of playback, which is less than the YP-Z5 but more than the nano. SanDisk bundles the Sansa e260 with the companys Media Converter, which allows users to import unsupported video and images to a playable scale. The video was a bit oversaturated, and footage is limited to 15 fps. The Frog Design-created menus (complete with little icons for Music, Voice, Video, etc.) are certainly a huge improvement over SanDisks past designs. The only thing we dont like is that the menu key doesnt take you back one screen; hitting it always returns you to the main menu. The rewind/previous key doubles as a back button most of the time, but not during playback. The glowing mechanical thumbwheel, while a little garish, gets the job done. VERDICT: The SanDisk Sansa e260 is well designed, and is stacked with features. Its not as svelte as Apples juggernaut, but for anyone looking for an iPod/iTunes alternative, SanDisks player is your best betand its less expensive, to boot.
